Activeworlds Back Online And New Squidoo Lens For Second Life Artists

Hey Activeworlds seems to be enticing members back! Has anyone else been invited and what do your think? Activeworlds was my first virtual world experience on a machine that barely ran it!) so there is a fondness in my heart for it!
Also I've created a new Squidoo lens for aspiring SL artists. Please take a look and tell me if you think it's missing anything? Would it help you if you were thinking of taking your art into Second Life? What else should I include? Thank ye!

Activeworlds is indeed back. The 5.0 version has lots to offer. And the avatars are completely custom built by the user. If you want to build its only 70$ a year and you will have no limits on the land you can claim in Alphaworld for example. A world can be yours for around 100$ a year and you get control of the entire environment sky, terrain, water, lighting, and a whole array of make it yourself particle emitters.

The only down side from a 2nd life point of view is that to create original objects you need to use a 3D model porgram (you can get truespace for free from Activeworlds but anything you make must be exported to dxf then converted in 3rd party freeware to rwx foprmat. You also need access to the world object path ( so that means you need your own world host and objec tpath. There are tons of free objects you can add if you do have your own world and object path. On a positive note an new user can start building in Activeworlds within minuites of arrival and using the AWSchool world lessons (free with real live teachers) can quickly become an expert builder.

I use it because the interface to the 2D web is the best I have found to build information rooms (and I did try building an information room in 2nd life but it was a failure due to bandwidth issues). Also, I prefer the moderated environment on the public worlds (google AW Peacekeepers) l where I can take a grieving problem to someone who does something about it. If you have interest in the information room concept check out and look at the project pages.

Yes, I found Activeworlds to be a bit confusing! I especially love the art colony of Nova Scotia, I'd hang out there quite a lot! I think the rate is very reasonable for having an entire world space to create something in! Could you post a link on the project pages? : )

Been working in ActiveWorlds for about a year and a half now, making inteligent virtual agents for a government entity. It is not as amenable for creation as SL, but it has some good features.

Wow! Sounds fascinating! And you are getting paid! Wish I could figure out how to make a living off of my love of the virtual! : )
Was it difficult to learn how to script for Activeworlds?

It is a small paid project. I have two part time scripters working with me. They did not find it difficult, but it was based on code we already had for other virtual humans, Had to get the domain right for the topic area though. That was most of the work.

How do we get access to the Squidoo lens?

Glad to see you are into the SL Art scene.
I am just finishing up an article for a Journal on that topic.

That's wonderful, seems like the arts in SL is gathering more steam and importance. Send me a link to your article when you are done, I will add it to the Squidoo page! Also you're welcome to stop by my gallery anytime it's at 19 The artpark next door is mine as well and houses the Gene Shaw Museum, oh, I'm Nima Benoir in SL : ))

Actually I am concocting a plan for artists that I'll share with you as it gets more fleshed out. It's a way for some who are interested to volunteer to help people with PTSD. Your forum would be one great way to get information about this effort out to artists. Stay tuned.
