Association of Virtual Worlds

The Business & Social Network

For those of us who have branched out from Second Life and started exploring the Open Sim world, there is good news. Before, you had to create and rename a new shortcut of the SL Viewer, go into the properties, change the "loginuri, put in a url and a port, and you were done. A pretty daunting task for a casual traveler through Virtuality. Now along comes Hippo Opensim Viewer:

This nifty piece of software allows you to merely choose a grid....and go! It will access quite a number of grids including SL itself. All you need is an account for the grid so you can log in.

There is a button at the bottom called "Grid" that brings up a choice menu box.

You then select a grid from the menu (there a quite a few), either set it as default or just hit apply and your done. You then log on using your name & password and it loads up. You can also add new grids. I added ReactionGrid by following the steps provided and it worked fine. You have to register with the grid you want to enter of course. Then you log in and go;

The plusses to this are obvious:
1 All your access is in one program.

2. Will make the concept of a portable Avatar, such as MYRL is working on, easy to deploy

3; It just plain works, and works well.

Let's face it. Whether you like the Second Life concept and architecture or not, the Lindens have made a profound impact on Virtual Reality. This idea and others are going to take the concept to a whole new level.

At the moment it seems to be ported for Windows XP, Vista and for Linux. With the Linux port already there, Mac shouldn't that hard to port for. Maybe in the future. I wish that more things were ported for MAC. I would fire my G$ up in a minute for that.
