A recommedation rests on what you want to do in a virtual world.

I'd recommend www.activeworlds.com The universe does not have the user desity of SL but the people will at least speak to you and are generally well behaved and nice.

Building there is much eaiser that SL and for 70$ a year, or two years with the ongoing special offer, you can build as much as you want without restriction. If you wanted your own island in SL but could not afford it 2.5K$ - you can get your own world for about 80$ a year.

I recommend 3D Planets

We are a FREE site based on blaxxun Platform 5.1, open over 5 years with aprox. 10,000 members. VRML World Creators may have their work uploaded for free and have it showcased in our "Oort Cloud" with other member-created worlds or even have it loaded as your personal home in our community. Unlike Some other sites you always retain 100% ownership of your creations and we make no claims as to it's use other than it be family-friendly.

Not long ago we began to offer "blaxxun-orphans", or builders who now find themselves without a chat client since blaxxun's demise, a simple solution to not only have reliable 2d and 3d chat for their world but also to benefit from all the other amenities of our community such as Message Boards, a MySpace-like Profile with the ability to alter your "home page" using HTML and CSS, full-length movies, music, games, and many other features not found in other communities.

Recently we signed Avatara and Jeff Bedrick so that their Worlds could be showcased with the ability to interact in 3D chat and we have about 2 dozen other worlds by various creators on display as well.

Drop in as a Visitor and have a look around, the PLACES LIST found via a button on the upper-right panel will let you navigate to any area on our site. You will need the blaxxun Contact plugin to view our 3D content, if you don't already have this plugin installed a link to it can be found above the chat window in the first area you enter in 3D Planets after signing in (The Hub).
