Association of Virtual Worlds

The Business & Social Network

I am looking to find the number of users of virtual worlds in the US. I have heard lots of different numbers and they are so vastly different. Anyone who can help would be appreciated. can be with the kids or without. Thank you

A lot of people are asking this question lately. I know the grids can be indexed by web crawlers if the owners let them, but I don't know if that includes the number of residents. Maybe it’s time to set up a public marketing research project designed get some realistic and accurate answers.
There has to be some public records for those grids being run as corporations, and almost all of them use the opensimwi interface for adding members, which reports the number of residents in the database along with the number of unique visitors within a specified time period. So, getting enough data to generate valid and reliable estimates is definitely possible. However, filtering out “bots”, and inactive accounts will take a great deal of detailed and careful investigation.
Try this-- chose a country then chose search members from that country in a type (adults female and nonsmokers)then be surprised that of the 2000 listed 1000 are inactive acounts / 500 are basic free subscription/and 500 actualy pertisapate and spend real cash == So if you rhave only 1/4 of people spending cash is that a real buisness/?
Kzero has some very useful information

Thanks James

Thanks for sharing this great resource. Real data is needed in order to accurately evaluate and promote virtual reality worlds.

I agree, KZero has great information and some of the best presentations of data but they do not often show how they derived their data and came to their data conclusions.
My data from last year was worldwide registrations (not necessary active):

Strategy Analytics' Barry Gilbert reports that there are 137M Virtual Worlds registered users now and predicts 1B by 2017

Vito, I was very interested in reading this article but could not find a good link...
As of this time and date 3D Planets has 12,459 registered users in 113 countries world-wide. For the past year or so we have been averaging 300+ new members per month. During the month of September we had 3246 unique visitors for an average of 108.2 per day. Maybe not up there with The Big Guys like Second-Life but not bad for one of the Very few remaining Blaxxun chat comms still online :)
