there's alot of different VR worlds out there, but the main thing is, how much are you willing to spend on them to get started, and get going in each one as a developer. Three popular ones that pop into my head right off the bat are Second Life, There.com and IMVU. Each with there own engine, there own toolset, so learning process for each one is a little different as well. One that I've been thinking about getting involved with for some time now, that not alot look at in retrospective, is Entropia Universe, probably not the cup of tea for everyone, but its one thats interested me for awhile.

You're quite right Caleb. 'Milage May Vary' applies as well. It's a complex process, but should be based on your specific need. Some are in VWs simply for the social aspect, so heavy social networking aspects are important, and minimal cost is also desirable.

The other end of the range is immersive VWs where you need to invest in order to get started. SecondLife is one of the least expensive ways to become involved in a VW. More expensive and specialized VWs are available, such as Forterra or ProtoSphere. Another dimension to consider is your level of gaming interest; some worlds have a heavy game emphasis (Entropia) and others less so (Selective SL locations).

CTO needed

Ikatoo is an early stage start-up company specialising in innovative advertising solutions for virtual worlds. We are seeking a highly skilled programmer to serve as our CTO. This is an excellent opportunity to get involved in the earliest stages of an exciting Interactive Digital Media company with huge potential and work in a senior management position from the beginning.

We are looking for a highly motivated and resourceful candidate who can take a leadership role from the get go. You will have the opportunity to make a major impact in the development of our company. Joining Ikatoo at this stage could allow you to make more money in five years than any other job.

Your role will be to design the overall infrastructure of our system. We do not require expertise in a specific language, but instead the ability to learn new languages and become an expert fast. We need someone who is really good at what they do.

Qualified candidates please send your resume to Juan Herrada - juan@ikatoo.com

Hi. I am writing to invite you to My Metaverse (http://www.mymetaverse.ning.com). My Metaverse is about developing the new media arts and community across all the virtual worlds. Here's where you can upload your original music, original machinima or movies, start a blog or comment on others, join a group like the musicians, the machinimatographers, the journalists, the comedians and actors - and of course any of the Virtual World groups. This is also a place where you can send out news stories to the online journalists in the NEWS group. Hope to see you there.

Hope to see you there soon

We have just launched www.tripshows.net

I need people to test it and fill it with initial content. This is a travel social media site. I need people to upload travel videos, pictures and make comments. I need people to invite others to join. Really test it out.

I'm going to give a free t-shirt to the firs 20 people who sign up as well as an additional shirt to the top 5 rated videos (that way you don't have to be in the top 20).

Just send a private message to the user danlovy when you sign in.

thanks

A new internet TV program launches on February 1st that delves into how people spend their lives online. Life On Line, as the name suggests is about how people are increasingly spending more of their lifetime using the internet .

The TV show is the brain-child of Australian journalist and communications consultant Steve Cropper, who in 2008 was 'Angelico Babii', host of the LATE SHOW on Metaverse-TV (www.metaverse-tv.com) and the creator of My-Metaverse (www.my-metaverse.com) a social network for people involved in the new media arts on the web.

"We want to go deeper into how people use their online time for news and entertainment, creativity, love, friendship, business, shopping, political engagement, work and play - or any other reason", said Cropper. "We also scan the internet for emerging new talent - musicians, movie makers, writers, bloggers - anyone who is contributing to the richness of digital life".

Life On Line includes a cast of seasoned bloggers, journalists and entertainers including internet band, Space Junky - three people living in the US, Australia and Malaysia who collaborate, record, produce and market their music entirely onine. The line-up also boasts the Marketing Director of the Association of Virtual Worlds, Andrew Peters who is also a leading practitioner of social networking and internet marketing campaigns. Every episode features internet news man Sigmund Leominster, a veteran blogger. There are guest comedians and musicians and interviews with people making news across the internet.

You are invited to visit the life-on-line viewers' group website at www.life-on-line.ning.com

Hello people,

As more and more virtual worlds and grids pop up on the www the demand for use of textures (created and licensed for Second Life only) in these other locations has grown to a point were we felt we must at least try and offer some legal system to address this increasing demand.

When TRU was established in 2004, we made and sold textures in Second Life for Second Life.
Our licensing only covered that type of use for obvious reasons at that time.

When Linden Labs released the client as open source, new grids started to emerge and suddenly people want to export textures purchased for SL to other grids.

Many content creators were not comfortable with this notion whilst others made arrangements to meet the demand.

TRU is a co-op of over 70 artists and real life texture companies and each one has their own view and rules on how their content is licensed.

However, I am now excited to announce that TRU Textures Ltd (www.texturesrus.net) offers the ability for customers to purchase textures from our website via PayPal under the "Any World" license.

This means you can buy and download textures direct to your PC and use them in as many other grids and virtual worlds as you wish.
The license does allow for commercial content creation within other grids.

In addition to the Any World license we also have the Professional License which allows for use not related to grids and virtual worlds.
This type of licensing is much the same as if you had purchased textures from one of the many third party graphic related websites.
Uses include (but are not limited to) 3D props and scenes, models, website templates, printed media for personal or commercial use.

And finally, the Game Developer License which as the name suggests, is aimed at game developers.

Please note, textures purchased in Second Life with the Linden Dollar are as always, licensed for use "in" Second Life only.

Thanks for your feedback and patience over the last 18 months of development.

I have been making a living building virtual worlds on the Active Worlds server since 2006, the projects are large and require a lot of team work and time, 18 months to two years for anything substanital with a small team. Recently a company in Victoria BC, Miniature World wanted to develop a cyber extention of their business as part of their 40th Anniversary Celebrations, the result was a little world called Isle of Minutia (www.miniatureworld.com) As usual after a couple of years in development, the hard part is now strategizing how to attract an active audience. We know for a fact that activity in virtual worlds is event driven and at that regularity and purpose for being there is critical. I would be interested to hear more about how different worlds sustain their populations over the long term.
