Virtually Natural is a blog I've started on Wordpress written from the standpoint of a naturalist who finds himself in Second Life -- and isn't aware that it's not "real." I'm using it as a forum for talking about the way Nature is represented in virtual reality. I hope you enjoy!

Fear Abatement Through Systematic Desensitization Using 2nd Life

In SL I own Dogland Dog Park, and I work with owners of Virtual Dogs. I just finished a project with a psychologist I have become associated with. The project was designed to systematically desensitize 13 subjects to their RL fear of dogs. All 13 became virtual dog owners, in SL. Over the last few years there have been quite a few virtual places popping up. Second Life, Kaneva, IMVU, Exit Reality, Vivaty, Prototerra, etc., to name some. All of them are somewhat unique in their own way. Second Life is huge and immersive. IMVU and Vivaty are basically spaces that can be teleported to and from. Why would anyone buy a virtual T-Shirt?!

To many adults (and parents!) the very idea of spending money on virtual goods seems strange and even unsustainable; why would anyone spend money on a digital T-Shirt, it doesn't even exist!

Alone in a Virtual World

Ever walk into Second Life and have a feeling of loneliness overcome you? No real feeling of being immersed (almost like walking in on a fantastic party location and not knowing a soul to talk to and mingle with).
