Another successful (mostly) 90 minutes to OpenSim class.

We heard cheers from many new sim owners but alas a few did not quite make it all through. I will follow up with stragglers and have the next class date posted here soon. Watch www.ReactionGrid.com for details.

Secret Second Life Stealth Mode Revealed by University Researchers - and other recent SL news stories

And this is news…why?

Apparently it’s been a slow news week. That can be the only explanation for the dozens of publications which carried the story of a British couple who met in Second Life and are now divorcing because of an in-world affair.

The facts, briefly, are these. Amy Taylor and David Pollard met, fell in love, and married in Second Life. They also met, fell in love, and married in real life. Some time later Amy caught David engaging in sex with a… Continue

Ad Nauseam: Nodding Heads

I follow a number of marketing blogs (currently The Ad Contrarian is one of my favourites, but that's a different story). On Jonathan Trenn's Digital Street Journal he makes a point I think we all too often overlook when complaining that this or that person or group "just doesn't get it."

He writes of attending a conference in San Francisco during which he realized… Continue

Reporter throws tomahawk at Second Life

In the Daily Mail (dated: Friday 14th November, 2008), Tom Rawstorne authored a column entitled: Living a Second Life, a fantasy world awash with sex and porn. A column that portrays Second Life as a combination of virtual sleaze and immorality.

As if being handed the baton from the late Mary… Continue

My favorite game quotes of all time

Here are some of my favorite game quotes of all time (note these are not literally "game" exclusive, but could probably apply in many cases):

"Play every game as if it is your last one."

- Guy Lafleur

"Each player must accept the cards life deals him or her: but once they are in hand, he or she alone must decide how to play the cards in order to win the game."

-… Continue

My favorite quotes of all time

Here are some of my favorite quotes of all time from philosophers, politicians, scientists and other great persons throughout history:

"I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have." - Thomas Jefferson

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." - Thomas Alva Edison

"If I have seen further it is by standing on the… Continue

Ad Nauseam: Hell hath no fury

Asking advocates of social network marketing and virtual world promotions about the Return on Investment (ROI) can be as controversial as walking into an Al Qaeda hangout and asking their opinions on B’nai Brith. But then this is nothing new. Promoters of non-traditional advertising have always been a bit touchy on the subject. To illustrate, let me give an example from before the days of the Internet.

Many years ago I was commissioned to analyze a software program for a large… Continue

Juggling virtual time with real time

"virtual" the word is loaded with a reference of something transparent, non-physical. It is not imaginary, it is real and it takes up real time in real life.

After an 8 hour day of physically spending time at work, which isnt very physical for me these days, i sit at a desk most of the day, i am still physically tired. So i come home and start my second life work as a builder, checking messages, starting a new work period. While i dont need to do any physical work (physically flying… Continue

Ad Nauseam: The brave new world of social network marketing: Part 1

I have a confession.

For the past few months I’ve had a growing suspicion that much of the “new” marketing innovations employing social networks and virtual worlds just don’t work.

It started when I wrote an article back in July about the problem marketers face in Second Life due to its lack of real mass media (“Second Life circa 4 BC,” July 15, 2008). In it I noted that not only does Second Life not have any form of medium that reaches a majority, or even a large minority… Continue

Ad Nauseam: Shhh! I've got a secret

Brands are constantly being scolded for their pitiful attempts to break into Second Life. They build a few buildings, offer a few pointless freebies, and then sit back waiting for avatars to come flying in. It doesn't work, it hasn’t worked, and it’s not likely to work.

Consultants, such as Millions of Us, try to convince them that they must offer something to the community, and in some cases the suits have even listened — with varying results. The release of the newest Harry Potter… Continue
