There is a growing trend toward more personalized virtual worlds. There are several reasons for this:
1.) Greater control of the environment (Users, access)
2.) Data security
3.) Usability
4.) Reliability
5.) Focus
Currently, Second Life is not on the best vector for addressing some of these issues although it still remains a good platform for public facing initiatives, community building, and customer “friendly” interaction.
Corporate use has some additional needs that are being addressed by a number of other players. Some examples of corporate use and need would be:
1.) Private, secure multi-site meetings (intranet or B2B).
2.) Easy access (via the web or a simple client)
3.) 3D presentations (animated an static)
4.) 3D Design collaboration
5.) 3D data visualization
6.) 3D Walk-throughs (i.e. plant layout, new building)
7.) RL/VW integration
8.) Persisted team war-rooms, “museums”, virtual stock rooms or other 3D spaces that exist in the real world.
9.) Externally accessible Trade show type displays
10.) Machinima creation
Below is my current list of personal, private or portable virtual worlds. It’s a long list as the industry is still maturing. So expect rapid change, consolidation and lots of beta software.
